5 Reasons to Keep Track of Moon Phase Hair Cuts

Will cutting your hair with the moon phases get you the fabulous feeling of a great head of hair that you have always wanted? The answer might be that the only way you will know for sure is to try it out for yourself. It is not expensive and no one even has to know that you are conducting an experiment to find out.

The thing about the moon phases is that there are two camps of people with strong views about the moon phases and hair cuts. One group consists of people who practice it and know that it works. Period. The other camp is comprised of those who fiercely reject any effects of the lunar rhythm at all. I actually understand the way both sides think. But I do know one thing for sure: if I have learned anything at all in my years on this beautiful Earth, it is that personal experience is the most convincing path to knowledge and belief. Like the ancient Chinese wisdom says, “I hear and I forget, I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”

Here are five reasons to keep track of the moon phases for hair care.

Reason #1. To find out if it works for you. If you have just found your way over to my neck of the woods here, you will soon find out that I came to this moon-phase-hair-cut thing because I had a horrifying hair cut when the cut should have been just fine, considering the circumstances were the same as always. Same place, same person, etc. I began my own research about the moon and hair care and to track the timing of my hair cuts and the results. My personal experience proved that it works for me.

Reason #2. Memory alone can be selective. Maybe you can remember each detail of your life a month or year later, or maybe I am just at the age where I have to write things down. But I strongly suggest that you keep a written record for yourself. Anyway, a couple of times I forgot to record the moon phase and sign for my hair care date and my memory was simply not reliable enough to track it correctly. To be sure, just make a note on your calendar for the type of hair care treatment, the moon phase and the moon sign. Trust me.

Reason #3. To know when it works for your personal hair care goals. You may easily know exactly what you want, like your hair is short and you want to grow it out fast. Or your hair is thick and wild and you want it to grow out more slowly. I also found out that my hair cut needs change during the seasons. I actually want it longer in the summer so I can put it up during the heat. Over time, it is helpful to be able to track this for yourself.

Reason #4. To know when it doesn’t work for your goals. Whew, I sure found out in a few short weeks when I picked the wrong day for my goal. I had to pick a new day real quick to get back on track.

Reason #5. To track when your goals change. As I mentioned, hair care goals may change for the season, like for summer or winter. Or there may be a special occasion that you may want to prepare a hair treatment in advance so that you look and feel your best. Or, you realize that the first goal you chose was not the right one and you have to change it. We all have individual needs.

Ever have a really good hair day? There is nothing like it to boost confidence and self-esteem. Sure, technology and styling and products can get you there, but adding the natural cycle of the moon phases may be just the ticket to keeping it. It works for me and I know, if you give it a fair chance, it could work for you, too.

Confessions of a Moon Phase Haircut Luna-Tic

It may sound silly but, yes, I have to say, “My name is Laraine, and I cut my hair with the moon phases.” There, it is out. Others might say, “Right, you are a luna-tic.” Well, then, maybe I am. I did not always cut my hair with the lunar cycle. Being an avid fan of living with the moon phases for many years, I never did apply the principles to my hair cuts until I got a whopper of a bad hair cut one day. Completely astounded, I then made it my personal mission to discover what the heck it was all about.

Probably the first place you might go to find out about the moon phases to schedule any activity is to the Farmer’s Almanac. They have been predicting weather and giving gardening advice according to astrology for, what, almost two hundred years now. Tips for baking, canning, mowing, digging, pruning, weaning, potting training and hair cuts are listed for each month every year. Now, where does that information come from, I wonder? Ah, yes, it comes from “folklore,” that mysterious collection of past experiences from the traditions of our forefathers. If you say “folklore,” then you need not say any more about it than that. Don’t get me wrong, I am a follower of folklore, love hearing about it, and believe that our modern analytical thinking sometimes gets in the way of finding simple solutions. And disregarding folklore because you have not yet taken the time to understand it and believing that “modern” thinking is the only answer, well, I say you are missing a lot of good stuff.

Anyway, my story is about my current experience. Suffice it to say for this short article: I did my homework. Starting with the Farmer’s Almanac, I searched out about thirty other sources from books and the internet, and it is not an easy topic to research. There are plenty of folks who do not like the topic one bit, as you will soon find out if you follow my footsteps and research it for yourself. That’s okay, because everyone gets to make their own choices in this life. I wish them all well.

My first choice was to cut my hair on the third day before the Full Moon to “preserve vital energy,” as advised by the famous Munich hair stylist, Mr. Hirschbolz. Ute York wrote about this topic in the book called “Living by the Moon,” which you can easily find to purchase. I was so happy with that hair cut! I do not cut my hair often if I can help it. The “feel” of my hair is the most important issue for me. So, that cut was during a waxing moon.

The next hair cut I did was also a waxing moon. I picked a “vital energy” day also, to be sure not to push my luck too far. But this time I chose the other recommended vital energy day of three days after the New Moon. There was a huge difference compared to the previous hair cut. In just one-third of the time of the previous hair cut, my hair was growing like a weed. My notation for this cut is, “Hair is too long and too thick. Just getting in the way. Need a cut.” I did not like it.

So, what does this personal moon phase experiment tell me? It tells me that I much prefer a hair cut during the waxing moon just before the Full Moon. There is just too much “waxing” time going on if I cut it just after the New Moon. Do you know what I mean? The waxing moon lasts for a good two weeks. I prefer my hair to grow slower, so I want to hit the end of that time period. The rule is: waxing for faster and waning for slower. Even though my goal was to grow my hair slower, my best result was to choose the END of the waxing moon phase and take advantage of the vital energy day. For me, it was a great success.

The thing about this moon-phase-hair-cut thing is that it may take a little time to sort out which is the best moon phase day for the goal. It may not be your “I want my answer now!” type of modern expectation. On the other hand, I can also say that I realized my worst results fairly soon when I picked the wrong day for my goal. In short, I am more than delighted with cutting my hair with the moon phases. Yes, I am a moon phase nuthead, but I still took the time to use modern methods of testing out the “folklore” to see if it works for me. I am convinced because of my experiments, which makes me a certified Luna-Tic. How about you?

Prepare for Passover and Easter with a Hair Cut by the Moon Phase

Spring events with family and friends are right around the corner! Passover and Easter arrive in the middle of April and you are sure to have an invitation to a traditional family affair or a casual get-together with some close friends. Imagine that you arrive to the house and wait in the car or stand outside the door for a moment or two before going inside. You go through the mental checklist of your outfit: shoes, colors, accessories. Yes, you think, the style is just right for the occasion. What else? Oh, yes, the crowning glory of your hair sparkles in the sunshine! You toss it or smooth it and it feels just right to your touch and against your neck. It’s a good hair day! You feel great! What happened? It may be that you picked just the right day for your hair appointment by using the moon signs and phases.

Using the moon cycle for hair care is nothing new. Guided by the natural cycles of nature, men and women of earlier times lived daily with the movement of the moon and seasons throughout the year, making decisions for calendars, planting, health, animal care, food preservation, building, and even hair cuts. Modern science gave us new ways to live in an industrialized system, but the basic concepts about the moon cycle in the natural world are as valid today as they were centuries ago.

Both of the traditional spring holidays are timed according to the moon phase: Passover always occurs on the full moon, which is April 9 this year; and Easter, on April 12, falls on the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox. Whether you are new to the notion of using the moon signs and phases to time a hair treatment, or a big fan of lunar timing, here are a few tips about picking the dates for an appointment for this April. Some people need a couple of weeks to let a treatment set in and others look and feel the best with a quick hair cut before an event. There is a perfect moon sign or moon phase day for either choice.

The one astrological caution for this time of year is that Venus retrograde starts on March 6 which calls for conservative choices with appearance and purchases to prevent disappointment later on. Stick to familiar styles until Venus goes direct April 17. You will be glad you did not buy that new designer outfit with the bright colors or radically changed your haircut during this time.

Fast Hair Growth

To grow hair faster with the moon phases, choose to cut your hair on the New Moon or on one of days of the waxing phase before the next full moon. Particular astrological signs are favored as well. During the waxing moon in March, these signs occur on March 1, 28, and 29 in Taurus or March 5-6 and April 2 in Cancer.

Slower Hair Growth

Some people prefer to grow hair out more slowly to preserve a style or chemical treatment. In this case, have the hair cut during the waning moon phase, after the full moon. Again, certain astrological signs give a more favorable aspect during the waning moon. Before the April holidays, these are March 16-17 in Sagittarius and March 21-22 in Aquarius.

Perm, Color, and Chemical Treatments

For coloring or a chemical treatment that needs some advance time to settle in before either spring holiday event, choose an appointment day on March 1, 28 and 29 in Taurus, March 5-6 or Apr 2 in Cancer, or March 21-22 in Aquarius. Pick March 8 for a frizzy perm when the moon is in the sign of Leo.

Prepare Just in Time

The week before either holiday on April 9 or April 12 offers several choices for cuts and styling according to the moon phases. Cut hair to grow faster on the most favored day of April 2 while the moon waxes in Cancer, or on April 8 during the waxing moon phase. Do a permanent wave, relaxant, or chemical treatment on Monday, April 6, when the moon is in Virgo. Choose April 4 for a frizzy perm in Leo. Apply hair coloring on April 10-11 while the moon is in Scorpio.

Special events are sometimes stressful for the emotions, especially when we see our friends or family just a few times during the year. Taking the time to make a finished outward presentation of style helps a positive attitude on the inside shine through to almost guarantee a good time at the party. Now you step through the doorway to arrive at the party with confidence, knowing that you look and feel the best that you can be for the holiday event, with a little help from the moon phases.

Look Fabulous for Spring 2009 with a Moon Phase Hair Cut

March Holiday Hair Cuts with the Moon Phases

Are you ready for spring parties? Two fun holidays are right around the corner. St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 is on a Tuesday this year and the Spring Equinox occurs March 20 on a Friday. With a little planning, look simply fabulous for your favorite March holiday and start to perk up for spring. Some like a wild party for St. Patrick’s Day and others an inspiring ritual for the Spring Equinox. If you have a special party planned, read on for some tips to schedule your hair treatment with a little help from the moon phases.

Prepare: In Advance

Slow growth, waning moon. For chemical treatments that need a long lead time to settle down for the best appearance, prepare a full month ahead. February 17 is a good day for slow regrowth with the Sagittarius waning moon. It is also the best day to cut hair to grow slower and keep the style the longest.

Fast growth, waxing moon. On the other hand, wait until February 27 through March 1 if your goal is to grow hair out faster. March 1 is also marked for chemical treatments with the Taurus moon. Cut hair for faster growth and chemical treatments on March 3 with the Gemini moon. On Leo moon of March 7-8, cut hair to preserve a thicker quality. This Leo moon is also a good one to go for a wild, frizzy permanent wave.

Prepare: Just in Time

The week before St. Patrick’s Day starts the wane of the moon cycle, so cut hair to promote thickness and keep the style the longest on the March 10 Full Moon in Virgo. It is also a choice for a permanent wave or chemical treatment. During the wane of the moon, March 14 is the day to color hair for slow regrowth and cut hair to grow thicker and keep the style the longest. Use March 16 and the Sagittarius moon when to look your best with a fresh hair cut, and it will last longer, too. For a celebration of the first day of Spring, do a last minute coloring or hair cut on March 19 with the Capricorn moon.

Thousands of women (and men, too) are taking advantage of the timing of the moon cycle for their beauty appointments. Add the moon phases to your hair treatment plans and see if it makes a difference for you. There is nothing like a satisfying hair style to raise your confidence level on the day that you want to look your best.

Valentine's Day the Moon Phase Way

“My romance doesn’t need anything…but you…” The words of Carly Simon hit the day right on the mark for Valentine’s Day 2009. It doesn’t matter if your valentine is six years old or sixty – it’s Saturday night this year - and the perfect moon phase. Why do I say that? It is not a Full Moon! Correct, you’re right on the money.

In fact, it is exactly five days after the full moon. The pressure of the full moon days last week are over. The work week is over. This moon phase is neglected because it lacks the excitement of the New and Full Moons. Thinking is evolving now and the results of the last week are pressing in with a need for a change. Sure, there is most likely some mental predicament that is weighing on the mind, along with some confusion and doubt. This is normal for this part of the moon cycle.

Here is the perfect time to relax and let go. That’s a trick I have learned over the years working with the moon phases. Every time I let go of an attitude about a current issue, something new and wonderful pops up in its place as the best answer. Technical issue not working? Scrap it. There’s another way to do it. Lost for new ideas? Forget them, they will come later. Didn’t get what you wanted this week? There’s no going back. Just be here now with the current situation. Accept it. It’s time for a new perspective.

Enter now: Valentine’s Day on a Saturday! Now we have the perfect day to spend some relaxing time with your valentine. Let the worries ease up and just have a good time.

Use this moon phase day to restore balance. Have fun with your sweetie and gain valuable insights in the process that will serve you well all next week. Think about giving rather than receiving. Acknowledge what your Valentine gives to you every day. We all need to hear it. Be grateful. Be generous with your time. It’s not about spending money, it’s about spending quality moments with your nearest and dearest.
